Documents to check first
| Document | What to check | Red flag | Next step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Blue or green book | Registered owner and vehicle details match the item. | Book missing or seller says it comes later. | Pause payment and pickup until the ownership path is clear. |
| Seller ID | Seller name matches registered owner or authorized representative. | Bank account or chat name does not match documents. | Ask for clear explanation and supporting authority. |
| Chassis or VIN and engine number | Numbers match the book and visible vehicle markings. | Number cannot be shown or differs from the book. | Inspect in person or stop the purchase. |
| DLT transfer form | Current transfer process and signatures are ready. | Seller wants transfer after transport without clear reason. | Confirm current DLT requirements before pickup. |
| Power of attorney | Needed when the registered owner is not present. | Representative cannot show authority. | Do not treat a third party as owner without proof. |
| Tax and Por Ror Bor | Status is current enough for transfer and use. | Expired or unclear status. | Ask who will resolve it before pickup. |
| Finance or lien risk | No outstanding finance blocks transfer. | Seller says finance will be closed after deposit. | Delay transport until the finance path is documented. |
If you are buying remotely
Remote buying adds one extra risk: the vehicle can be collected before the buyer truly understands ownership. Ask for document photos, but treat photos as clues, not proof by themselves. Live inspection or a trusted local check is safer.
- Ask for a live video that shows the book and the same vehicle in one continuous flow.
- Compare visible plate, chassis or VIN area and seller details across documents and the listing.
- Keep a written handover note that separates seller checks from carrier pickup proof.
- Do not ask the carrier to make a legal judgment about documents. The carrier can only document what was handed over.
Document FAQ
Can I transport a vehicle before transfer is complete?
That depends on the buyer risk tolerance and current transfer path, but transport should not be used to solve an unclear ownership problem. Confirm documents first.
What if the seller is not the registered owner?
Ask why, who the registered owner is, and what authority allows the sale. A matching power of attorney or owner presence may be needed.
Can a carrier check the blue or green book for me?
A carrier can photograph what the seller presents at pickup, but cannot confirm legal ownership or guarantee transfer success.
